Highlights
  • Nuclear operators buy their fuel years ahead under long-term contracts, and EIA publishes how much of that future requirement each year is already bought. On its own numbers, US operators have contracted for 174,095 of the 360,373 thousand pounds of uranium oxide equivalent they expect to need between 2026 and 2035, leaving 186,278 thousand pounds, or 51.7%, still to buy PKR. The uncovered share crosses 40% in 2030 and reaches 94.3% by 2034.
  • That buying has to happen against a fixed legal deadline. US law bans Russian uranium imports but lets the Department of Energy grant waivers where no alternative supply exists. The waiver authority ends on 1 January 2028 P, while the ban itself runs to 2040, and the only publicly confirmed waiver holder is covered just through 2027. Uncovered US requirements in 2028 are 6,036 thousand pounds, or 17.8%, rising to 26.2% the year after.
